Professional dental cleaning methods
Dental cleaning is intended to eliminate any tartar buildup, remove stains from tooth surfaces, and polish the teeth.
Deep cleaning addresses problems such as gum disease and periodontitis. This method is more in-depth and is sometimes split into two dental appointments depending on the extent of the cleaning and the patient’s comfort level.
Routine Cleaning: A regular, superficial cleaning that removes tartar (hard mineral buildup) and any stains on the surface of your teeth.
Deep Cleaning: A more intensive type of cleaning which is used for people who are in the early stages of gingivitis, or gum disease. It usually includes dental scaling and root planing.
Scaling is the removal of tartar from tooth surfaces while Planing is the smoothing of root surfaces, as well as the removal of any infected parts of the tooth.
It may involve cleaning gum pockets, the area immediately below the gums and aims to stop and reverse the progression of gum disease
Benefits of dental cleaning
The journey to a healthier smile begins with a dental evaluation, examination and thorough cleaning.
It is a preventative treatment performed to thoroughly clean the teeth and gums.
Regular cleanings are an effective procedure in keeping the oral cavity in proper health, halting the progression of gum disease, and staining from your teeth.
The benefits of dental cleaning include:
- Plaque removal
- A healthier looking smile
- Fresher breath
- Overall health: It is easy to see the mouth as disconnected from the rest of your body, but complications in your mouth can cause disease–from dementia to heart disease–in other parts of your body too.

Generally, you should not expect any pain with your dental cleaning. If you happen to experience any discomfort, we will do everything they can to ensure you have a wonderful experience.
You may feel tickling vibrations, cool mist and light pressure from gentle scraping, but you should not feel discomfort or pain.
Does teeth cleaning have side effects?
Tips for managing these side effects
Caring for your mouth after dental cleaning can ease any discomfort and help your mouth along on the road to recovery.
If you are experiencing discomfort:
- Brush your teeth more gently for the first day, and ease back into your normal routine.
- Likewise, delay flossing if your gums are bleeding or sore.
- Use oral rinses to help prevent bacterial infection. Oral rinses can be prescription, over the counter, or even as simple as salt water.
- Over the counter painkillers are a great way to combat pain. Anti-inflammatory drugs can reduce the amount of swelling you may be experiencing.
